One of the key features of a Warré hive is the “quilt box” at the top. This provides invaluable insulation for the hive, particularly during winter.
The quilt box is half-height, and is either filled with loose wood shavings (or equivalent), or a “cushion” containing shavings.
The hive we received from Natural Beekeping Australia came with a cushion made like a pillowslip. Filled with wood shavings and rolled up, it works fine.
But it’s not as pretty as the one Priscilla made for me. Shown above, this is sown to neatly fill the 300x300x100 quilt box, and even comes with a zip. The jaunty fabric is a nice touch.
All you Warré beekeepers out there: I’m sure you’re jealous! 😉
